How does random video chat work?
You press Start, and a stranger appears. But what actually happens in the second between clicking and saying hello? Here is a plain-English look at how Stranger Chat works under the hood.
The basics
Random video chat connects two people who do not know each other for a one-to-one conversation. You open the page, and within a second or two you are face to face with someone, anywhere in the world. There is no account, no contact list and no saved history — when you press Next, that person is gone and a new match begins.
How matching works
When you press Start, Stranger Chat places you in a waiting pool. If you picked an interest, the matcher looks for someone who shares it. If not, you are paired with the next available stranger at random. People you have blocked are automatically excluded from your matches.
How the video gets to you
Your camera and microphone feed travels peer-to-peer using WebRTC. That means the video goes directly from the other person's browser to yours, rather than being uploaded to a server. Stranger Chat does not store or record your video. Text messages take a different path: they travel through the server so they can be delivered reliably, then disappear when the chat ends.
Text mode
Video is optional. Choose text chat and the whole conversation happens by typing — no camera, no microphone, no permission prompts. It is the same matching system, just keyboard only. You can even start in text chat and switch on video later if you both feel like it.
Next, skip and report
Three buttons keep you in control. Next ends the current chat and finds a new stranger. Skip lets you leave a match you are not enjoying. Report and block ends the chat, saves a record for review and permanently stops that person from matching with you again. Read more in our how it works guide.
