How Stranger Chat works
You can be talking to someone across the world in under ten seconds. No apps, no accounts, no waiting.
Pick text or video chat
Choose between text chat — no camera needed — or live video chat. Add optional interests so the matchmaker can pair you with like-minded strangers.
Click Start
You enter the queue for your mode. The server instantly matches you with the first compatible stranger — usually within a second or two. You'll see a "searching" animation until a match is found.
Talk, skip or stop
Type a message or turn on your camera and talk face to face. Use Next to skip to a fresh stranger, or Stop to leave the queue entirely. Both are anonymous and free.
How matching really works
When you click Start you're added to one of two queues — text or video. Each time someone joins, the matchmaker scans the queue for the best partner based on three rules:
- Compatibility. If both people set interests, they should share at least one. If you haven't added interests, you match with anyone.
- No re-matches. A short cooldown prevents you from being matched with the same person you just left.
- No blocked users. Someone you've blocked can never appear in your chat again.
If your interests are niche, don't worry — after a short wait the matchmaker relaxes the interest requirement so you're matched with a compatible stranger anyway, instead of waiting forever.
How video chat works
Video calls use WebRTC, the same technology behind Google Meet and Discord. Your camera and microphone connect directly to your partner's browser — peer to peer. Our servers only help them find each other with a small signaling message, so your video is never stored and never routed through us.
Privacy tip: you can join a video chat and keep your camera off. The other person will simply see you as a text chatter. Mic and camera are fully independent controls.
What happens when you leave
Press Stop or close the tab and your chat ends instantly. Your partner is returned to the queue to meet someone new. Rooms that sit idle are cleaned up automatically, and nothing you type is kept — chats are ephemeral by design.
