How online video chat works
When you press Start, you enter the video queue. The matchmaker pairs you with the first compatible stranger — someone who shares your interests when possible. Your browsers then establish a direct, encrypted WebRTC connection.
Because the connection is peer-to-peer, video quality is high and your feed is never recorded or stored on our servers. If the connection needs help, we fall back to STUN and TURN relays — see our how it works page for details.
Full control over your camera and mic
Your camera and microphone are independent. You can join a video chat with both off and appear as a text chatter, turn video on while keeping audio muted, or go fully live. Video is a choice, not a requirement.
You also control who you talk to. Press Next to skip to a new stranger at any time, Stop to leave the queue, and use block to make sure a person never appears in your chat again.
What to expect from a random video call
Most people are friendly and curious — that is why they are there. A typical video chat starts with a wave and a hello, a few questions about where you are from, and a conversation that either fades into a respectful goodbye or flows for an hour.
If you are worried about what to say, our built-in icebreaker games suggest conversation starters so the chat never dies. And because everything is anonymous, there is no pressure — you can be yourself from the very first frame.
Video chat on any device
Stranger Chat is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets and laptops. Video chat needs a camera and microphone; on mobile, the camera access prompt appears when you start a call. If you are on a slow connection, you can always fall back to text chat.
